Alternating reddish and white stripes with dark streak (not a spot) at caudal-fin base and frequently similar streaks at base of rear dorsal or anal fins.

Found in coastal reefs; silty reefs or wrecks in lagoons, bays, or harbors, may occur in aggregations in 1-84m; also found hidden in caves and cracks of rocks during the day, usually in areas subject to strong currents. Intertidal observations were also reported. Feed mainly on benthic crabs and shrimps, also preys on small fishes. Eggs and larvae are pelagic. Spine of preopercle venomous. Solitary or in groups

Found from Bali Strait to Timor Sea. Also recorded from Togean and Banggai Islands; with an Indonesian distribution from Moluccas to Sumatra. Anambas and Natuna Archipelago
